Event 6: Percy’s Reserve, Petone; Thurs 16 Dec

A showery evening but warm enough that it did not matter when running. Micheal Wood and Gavin Scott produced a course with 2 loops to start with and then a choice of three combinations (in any order) to finish.

The main interest of in the Mens Grade with Bryn and Tim locked together on points. The OMax format, with the runners starting at the same time meant that when they visited the Pivot control we knew who was ahead. After two loops Tim Robertson was about 10 seconds ahead. Tim chose to visit N2, N3 and N4 while Bryn chose N6, N2 and N1. In the end Bryn Davies won by 24 seconds to win the grade.

In the Veteran Mens Grade John Robertson took another win (by nearly 2 minutes) to win the grade.

Other Grade winners on the night were Piret Klade, Ann Kendon and Lara Molloy. Unfortunately, a clash with a junior Orienteering training camp meant many School boys and schoolgirls were away this week.

Event 5: Khandallah Park; Wed 8 Dec

A cold cloudy evening but a very close finish in Men’s grade. Nick Hann produced a course using sportident with 4 slightly different control positions for a number of controls locations. This lead to some of the close racing. Jamie BW came out on top in the Men’s race, and this leaves the Mens grade still open to the result of the final round with Tim Robertson and Bryn Davies still tied for first place. Lizzie Ingham won the Womens race and the other grade winners were John Robertson, Lara Molloy and Joe McKenzie.

Despite not winning, Jame Harding (Veteran Women) and Shamus Morisson (Schoolboys) join Piret Klade (Women) and Lauren Turner (Schoolgirls) as confirmed Grade Winners.

The Veteran Mens grade is also still to be decided with Michael Wood then Dick Dinsdale at the top, but John Robertson in pole position (having missed two rounds), but needing to finish in the top 3 to win outright.

Event 4: Day’s Bay, Eastbourne; Tues 30 Nov

A beautiful evening at Days Bay. Jason Markham produced a course with three loops and two pairs of controls to choose one of in the final loop. The course required climbing the hill behind Williams Park twice and the difficulties of finding some indistinct paths.

Tim Robertson managed to turn the tables on Bryn Davies and tie up the Men’s points with two rounds to go. Piret continued her dominance of the Women’s series confirming a series win as did Lauren Turner in the Schoolgirls series. Matt Turner managed to beat Shamus Morrison to keep the Schoolboys series alive. Jane Harding won the Veteran Womens Grade and John Robertson the Veteran Mens Grade, but both competitions are still wide open for two good performances in the final rounds.

Laura Robertson also pushed Piret close in the Open Womens Grade missing out by 2 seconds. Event 2: Harcourt Park, Upper Hutt; Wed 17 Nov

A very nice summer evening with only light winds. James presented a course of two loops and 9 X controls which you had to visit 8 at any time. Keeping track of the number of X controls still needed and where they were was a constant challenge throughout the course. Unfortunately some of the controls were missing, removed by persons unknown. This would have caused some competitors a problem, but there is little we can do about it.

This week Bryn turned the tables on Tim winning by 50 seconds. The close finish this week was between Piret and Lizzie in the Womens Grade with Piret winning by 8 seconds. John Robertson, Shamus Morrison, Lauren Turner and Jane Harding were the other Grade winners.

Introductory Course Results to follow

Event 1: Pinkerton Park, Newlands; Tue 9 Nov

A nice night, although a little cool in the shade, and an extremely close finish on time. The runners had two loops completed with two runners in each heat doing a loop in the opposite order, then the other loop and a common final loop on which they could leave out 2 controls. Tim Robertson beat Bryn Davies by one second, unfortunately they were not in the same heat (will bear this in mind next week) and Nick Hann (who was in the same heat as Tim) came in only 18 seconds back. Piret easily won the Womens grade with Shamus Morrison (Schoolboys), Keith Wild (Veterans), Lauren Turner (Schoolgirls) and Jane Harding (Veteran Women) the other grade winners. It turns out that Bryn, Nick and Jason Markham all left out Q and X, while Piret left out U and X (which was my choice). Of course there were some sad stories of people who did all the controls, but that is part of the fun of Omax, listening to the instructions and thinking fast while running.
